Baikonur or Baykonur It is the name of the space launch or cosmodrome polygon, as the Soviets usually say, most important in the USSR, near the city of Tyuratam, not far from Lake Aral, about 2,100 km. Southeast of Moscow.

Its origin dates back to the mid-1950s, when the Soviets began experimenting with their large intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), which shortly thereafter became the rockets with which the space age would begin.

The first facility in Baikonur, considered as an ideal place because it was quite far from the prying eyes of US military bases in Turkey, was built to test the launch of ICBN R-7.
