The astrogeology It is a new scientific specialization driven by the extraordinary development of Astronautics. Just as geology deals with the structure, composition and evolution of the Earth, astrogeology addresses the same issues, but applied to the other planets of the solar system.

Until the late 1950s, the only information on planetary geology came from observations from Earth, and allowed us to have a rough idea of the characteristics of the planets' surfaces, their atmospheres, and their interior.

Astronautics has allowed us to make observations from closer, and sometimes "in situ" with retransmission of data, and it has been possible to collect material to be analyzed. In this way it has been possible to transfer geological, geophysical, seismological, etc., research techniques used on Earth to other worlds.
