Even the largest of modern optical telescopes is small when compared to the light pick-up power of the Central Receiver Test Facility (CRTF) in New Mexico, USA.
The CRTF has 220 mirrors of 7 meters in diameter each, focused on the same tower. The main purpose of the CRTF is research on methods to collect and use solar energy. The CRTF does not generate focused images of the sky like normal astronomical telescopes, but collects light from a much larger area.
The astronomers of the STACEE project use the CRTF to collect the secondary light that is emitted when high-energy gamma rays collide with the Earth's atmosphere.
